Upgrading BOE XI 3.0 To BOE XI 3.1

There exists two ways of upgrading a BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.0 environment to version 3.1.

  1. Upgrade patch. Business Objects has an upgrade patch available. This patch will upgrade your BOE XI 3.0 environment to BOE BI 3.1. One important thing to remember is that with this option you will not get the .NET platform installed. If you are interested in the .NET platform you should go with option 2.
  2. Full installation. This option consists of two steps; first you uninstall the BOE XI 3.0 environment and then perform a new BOE XI 3.1 installation. This option is your only choice if you want the .NET platform.

If you try to do a simple installation (option 2) and you got BOE XI 3.0 installed the installation program will halt with an error message and exit.

As always, perform backups of the CMS and Audit databases as well as the File Repository Servers.

For more information, read the following documents from Business Objects:

  • BusinessObjects XI 3.1 Update Installation and Deployment Guide
  • BusinessObjects Enterprise 3.1 Upgrade Guide

BOE JVM 1.6 Support

As I wrote in a previous article (http://boinshort.blogspot.com/2007/06/java-16-and-web-intelligence.html) there are some compability issues with Java 1.6 and WebI.

I created a case today with Business Objects asking if there is or will be a patch for this. Clearly we are not alone in the world with this problem. The BO support called me up shortly after explaining that no patch exist but the issue is resolved in Service Pack 3 that is scheduled for release this month.

The ADAPT number for this fix in SP3 is ADAPT0082917.

Java 1.6 and Web Intelligence

Since the release of Java 1.6 there is a known problem with prompts in Web Intelligence. The problem is that the parameter window never opens. It just opens for a tenth of a second and then closes.

If you have this issue you must uninstall the 1.6 version. This is a bug, but if you read the platforms.txt the 1.6 version is not supported. But it should be! Why is this so important you may ask? One of our customers have applications that require Java 1.6.

We will open a case with BO if this issue is not solved after the summer.
